– Ritual Skills –
Magic for Challenging Times
April 16th to May 21st
Magic, according to occultist Dion Fortune, is “the art of changing consciousness at will.”
That’s a definition that can serve for meditation, personal growth, or political change
Never have we needed magic more!
About The Course
The tools of magic and ritual can deepen our awareness, enhance our consciousness, create a sense of belonging and help us face together those things that are too hard to face alone. Starhawk draws on half a century of experience writing, teaching and creating magic and ritual to help us stay grounded and sane in the midst of chaos, design actions and ceremonies that unite our communities in this time of stress and fear, process our grief and despair, and strengthen our will to create a world of justice and compassion.
Participants in this series will learn and hone a variety of the skills needed to create a sustaining personal practice as well as craft and lead rituals in a wide variety of settings. In addition, we’ll explore how we can weave magic into secular situations to help create deeper bonds of connection, enhanced solidarity, and the ability to face repression with confidence and courage.

Magical Tools
- Session 1: Personal Practice for Staying Grounded and Centered – Grounding, tools for releasing anxiety and fear, anti-worry rituals, establishing a personal practice. Shielding, self-protection, and self-regulation
- Session 2: Ritual and Basic Human Needs – Ritual can be a powerful way to meet our needs for a sense of safety, belonging, value, agency and meaning. We’ll look at and experience a variety of ritual forms and tools that meet each of these needs, and consider how to adapt ritual skills for groups of different orientations and purposes, from protests to healing circles.
- Session 3: Magic in the Streets – In this session, we’ll look at some of the magical and ritual skills we can adapt to campaigns, marches, protests and demonstrations—and ways we can support actions and campaigns even if we aren’t able to physically be there. How can we positively prefigure the world we want?

Making Change
- Session 4: Story – Story moves emotion, and a powerful ritual tells a story. So does a political campaign that works! We can base a ritual around a myth, tell a cultural story, or weave in personal stories. This session explores how we can use story in ritual, and how our political organizing, when it works, is a form of story telling that can build solidarity and community.
- Session 5: Priestessing Powerful Emotions – How do we evoke real emotion in ritual? How do we then release and transform them, comfort the bereaved, encourage the fearful, and enhearten the despairing? How do we use these skills at a time when so much is being lost?
- Session 6: Vision and Hope – Our series culminates in a ritual of vision and hope that participants will co-create and co-lead.
