SUMMARY:Introduction to GIS Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to GIS Mapping is focused on digital map creation and layout. This course will lay the foundation for creating functional maps with Geographic Information System (GIS) software. This is a practical how-to course designed to introduce students to digital mapping tools. We will demystify the complexity of digital tools and translate professional mapmakers’ jargon into easily understood terms. During this class\, we will be using QGIS mapping software. QGIS is an open-source (free) application that stands alongside ESRI ArcGIS (paid service) as the industry standard for digital mapping. No prior GIS mapping experience is necessary to take this course. To learn more\, please visit the Introduction to GIS Mapping for Permaculturists webpage or register below. SUMMARY:RESTORATION INTENSIVE
DESCRIPTION:Fire\, Forests\, & Animal AlliesRestoration Intensive: Fire\, Forests\, & Animal AlliesEarth Activist Training’s Restoration Intensive is an in-depth\, hands-on course teaching practical land restoration skills. This intensive focuses on fire-resilient landscapes\, erosion\, and stream restoration\, and integrating livestock as an element of restoration. There’s a quiet revolution going on in the woods! Communities are banding together to take responsibility for their forests and grasslands to create more safety and resilience in the face of climate-intensified wildfires. This ten-day intensive will immerse you in one such community\, and give you hands-on experience with the many aspects of forest and grassland management. We will be assessing the forest for fire danger\, thinning\, pruning\, limbing up\, creating shaded fuel breaks\, pile burns\, prescribed burns (weather permitting)\, working with government and other local agencies\, making biochar\, inoculating mushrooms\, and creating other value-added products from the woods. Grazing can be one of our key tools for fire prevention and grassland regeneration\, when done right. In our animal care segments\, we’ll have a chance to work with sheep\, goats\, cows\, poultry\, and live-stock guardian and herding dogs. We will learn about animal care\, psychology and training\, fencing\, herding\, and other aspects of humane care. Please visit the Restoration Intensive webpage to learn more or register below. SUMMARY:Advanced Permaculture - Soil & Animals
DESCRIPTION:Understanding soil is key to any resilient land design. Come learn how to build healthy living soils for vibrant landscapes and resilient communities. Taught by senior instructors Starhawk and Charles Williams\, this class will guide you through the art and science of building soils for productive landscapes.  You can take this class as a stand-alone class for personal growth\, or as the third module in a four-part Advanced Permaculture certificate program. Course will cover: BUILDING SOIL & CARBON Soil Analysis: Learn the ecology behind the regenerative theory of soil management. Gain skills in soil biology\, chemistry\, and structural analysis.\n\nStrategies for Soil Healing and Management: Examine regenerative soil strategies ranging from small urban settings to large-scale farming systems. Learn how to build and maintain healthy soils through techniques such as no-till\, compost teas\, ferments\, crop covers\, and biochar.\n\nApplied learning: Take what is taught in class and apply it in the real world. Through class exercises and case studies write your own soil management plan.LAND MANAGEMENT WITH ANIMALS & FIRE Integrating Animals Into Ecological Systems: Learn how to design wildlife and domestic animals into systems for resilience and restoration.\n\nPractical Soil Management with Animals: Explore the role of animals in building soil\, sequestering carbon\, and improving ecological resilience.\n\nPerennial Systems Thinking: Integrate animals\, perennial plants and a systems approach to write your own holistic animal and perennial system design. To learn more\, please visit the Advanced Permaculture – Soil & Animals webpage or register below. SUMMARY:Tool Use & Repair 101
DESCRIPTION:There is power in knowing how to make common repairs that keep our living spaces more livable. The cost and availability of trades folks as well as difficult landlords can prevent basic repairs that keep our homes functioning and comfortable. The workshop includes basic hand and power tool use\, simple plumbing\, drywall repair\, flooring maintenance and repair\, resolving window issues including replacing broken windows\, and repair requests from students. Further\, we will discuss how to find useful on-line resources to address a multitude of repair challenges. This workshop is for Farmsteaders\, Renters\, Homeowners\, Squatters and anyone who needs to make simple repairs in your living space. This is an inclusive workshop for gender identities and expressions typically excluded from trades skills. Centering queers\, femmes\, and thems. All are welcome. SUMMARY:Sustainable Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Learn the fundamentals of homestead scale energy systems and waste management. This class will provide the technical know-how you didn’t know you needed. Managing land ecologically is a resource-intense activity that requires finding a balance between consumption\, ecological impact\, and financial solvency. We will look at how to balance these often complex and sometimes competing needs. The focus of this class is on small scale energy systems\, material choices\, and waste management. We will explore how to design\, maintain and manage energy systems\, integrate cyclic waste management strategies\, and find low-impact materials for landed projects. SUMMARY:Designing a World of Abundance
DESCRIPTION:Abundance is clean water\, nutritious food\, healthy children\, and a thriving community. True abundance does not come from far off politicians or the economic rat race. True abundance comes from building healthy communities and landscapes. From true community connection and reciprocal relationships with ecosystems. High paced\, modern human settlements and economies generate “abundance” for a few at the expense of the many. This is by design. Humans designed our way into ecological crisis and economic collapse and we can design our way out. We can design our communities and economies for true abundance. Learn how\, in this free webinar with veteran permaculture designer Erik Ohlsen and visionary living systems designer Brandi Mack. Join us for an evening on how we design a World of Abundance and give it birth. To learn more\, please visit the Designing a World of Abundance webpage or register below.
