A program sponsored by Earth Activist Training.

An intensive apprenticeship in magical and practical healing for ourselves, our communities and the earth. Myth and story guide us through a deep process of personal transformation, anchored with practical skills.

Spring Session: Tam Lin—Entry to Faery

There is a world behind the world—the faery realm of magic and imagination, of healing and danger. Myths, fairy tales, old ballads and poetry can take us there, and what we learn in that realm can help us transform the world of the everyday.

In this five-day intensive, the old Norfolk ballad of Tam Lin is our entry into the Otherworld. We’ll explore what it means to be stolen away by the Fae, and how to retrieve our mortal souls and be a bridge between the worlds. Herbs and medicinal plants are another key to unlocking the energetic realms—and knowledge of energy and spirit can help us deepen our skills of healing. This apprenticeship combines practice at the magical skills of energy reading and trancework with practical skills of growing, distilling, and preparing herbal medicine.

The intensive is followed by six months of online mentorship and monthly assignments to deepen skills.

Those who take the Spring Intensive are eligible for the Fall Intensive:

Part Two: Tam Lin—Deepening the Magic
An advanced intensive in magic and herbalism. Open to those who have taken the Spring Intensive—or equivalent: A Reclaiming Elements class, an Earth Activist Training, or equivalent experience with magic and priestessing. Instructions to apply will be available in Spring 2018.

Our spiritual roots:
Starhawk is a co-founder of the Reclaiming tradition, grounded in the heritage of the Witches—practitioners of the ancient, earth-based Goddess spirituality of Europe and the Middle East. Reclaiming is an egalitarian tradition, incorporating deep, transformational healing and active engagement with the world and its problems.

Demetra Markis is an herbalist, acupuncturist, musician and gardener who manages Golden Rabbit Ranch. She is committed to the practice of community medicine and the stewardship of land, plants and people. She has turned to the practices of listening, service, and song as the foundation of her connection to spirit.

Structure of the intensive:
Each day will begin with creating sacred space in circle together.
Mornings will focus on magical tools and skills and deep personal work.
Afternoons will include hands-on work with the land and the herbs, and dedicated time for affinity group check-ins. We will get our hands dirty with digging and building, gather and prepare medicines in a variety of forms, make offerings and connections to the land, and engage in spiritual practices through the process.
Evenings will take us through a cycle of co-created rituals delving deeper into the myth and moving through a transformational process.

The site:
Accommodations and class space will be at Black Mountain Preserve in the beautiful Cazadero Hills of Western Sonoma County. Students will stay in comfortable dormitories; a limited number of private rooms are available at additional cost.

Hands-on practice will be at Golden Rabbit Ranch, nearby, where Demetra and Starhawk are developing a carbon-sequestering medicinal herb farm and food forest.

This course is for you if:

  • You hunger to connect with others in deep and meaningful ways.
  • You want to get your hands in the dirt.

Work-trade and Scholarships: Limited work-trade and scholarship positions will be available for a reduced tuition.

About our Northern California course location

Black Mountain Preserve is in the Cazadero hills area of northern California, in west Sonoma County. The Preserve centers around a complex of dorms, dining room and kitchen, classroom and offices, and is surrounded by 485-acres of forest and coastal hills. Expect a wide variety of natural beauty. Walking trails and unused dirt roads lead off in several adventurous directions, through ecosystems of redwood/fir, oak/madrone, and coastal prairie. You can see the ocean from high points on the property, while a couple of creeks run through in low spots.

We have held Earth Activist Training  sessions at Black Mountain since 2001; it is currently owned and operated by the Padmasambhava Peace Institute, a Tibetan Buddhist group. At one time Black Mountain was a state camp for petty offenders, but renovations have made it a cozy and comfortable conference center, a real-life swords-into-ploughshares example. There is a Peace Garden and a Rain Garden designed by students from our Permaculture Design Certificate program. Across from our classroom is a beautiful and authentic Buddhist altar room, which is open to registrants for quiet meditation.

Black Mountain is primarily accessible by car, and we strongly encourage carpooling. The region is well-served by public and private transit options and we will assist with organizing carpools from regional transit hubs for folks flying in or taking the bus. We will send out a complete welcome packet with plenty of detailed information six weeks prior to the beginning of the course.

Accommodations
Our standard housing is included with tuition: several comfortable dorms with beds, for which you can bring your own bedding or rent some from Black Mountain at extra fee. A small number of private single or double rooms are available for an additional fee. Please use your registration form to indicate your preference.

Food
Our standard is local, organic, globally-inspired vegetarian-friendly meals, served three times a day, plus afternoon and evening snacks. All food is fresh, plentiful, and substantial. Teas and coffee are available at all times.

Please use your registration form to request special meal choices. Meat is served one meal/day for omnivores, while vegan variations are available at every meal. Options such as no-dairy, gluten-free, and avoidance of common allergens are also possible if requested in advance. While we make every effort to accommodate food needs, those with highly specialized diets may need to bring some of their own food. Please indicate on your registration if you have any concerns about the food or to make special arrangements, and our Coordinator will work with you.

Almanac for Spring 2018
April is a wonderful month to visit this region. It is the tail end of the rainy season in this part of the world, with native wildflowers in bloom and lush green hills. The evenings can be cool before the real warmth of spring settles in. We advise all students to prepare to dress warmly and bring rain gear, as we will spend ample time together outdoors! Your welcome packet will include a detailed packing list.
